Here is our weekly survey of things worth looking at, here and elsewhere.
Streaming
This weekend was the Sierre-Zinal trail race, a mountain half marathon run at incredible speeds. Watch the last few kms from the livestream—I've queued up the times below—to see the tightest and fastest finish in race history. Keep in mind that this is after more than two hours of running and thousands of feet climbed, and they're still finishing at sub-5-minute mile paces.
Podcasts
We had a new podcast episode out this week. While superficially about financial markets, it was really about the importance of discipline in all things, from health, to finance, and everything else. We have a tendency to over-react and look for patterns where there aren't any, to our detriment.
Reading
While it's not a book, trail runner Kilian Jornet recently posted his training schedule so far for 2024, and it is fascinating reading. It shows the incredible load tolerance, discipline, and time required to operate at the very highest levels of his sport. Just remarkable.
Music
It's a few months old, but I'm still looping Hozier's "Too Sweet" a lot on recent runs. Like most of his tracks, it's gem-like stuff.
Gear
Long mountain runs always require more water than you can carry, so water filters are important. I (Paul) have various filters, but my go-to remains the Sawyer Squeeze. While flawed—filling the bag is painful and awkward—they deserve their top ratings for speed and effectiveness of water filtering. Note that there is also a mini version is which is good and lighter, if slower.
